Description

Brian Miller (Retired-Vermont State Police) brings a commonsense approach to workplace safety by providing tools that you can immediately use to remain safe and be better prepared for emergencies. As a former Commander of the Vermont State Police Negotiation Unit and through his 28-year law enforcement career Brian has learned verbal and non-verbal skills that are effective to de-escalate angry or violent people. Learn concepts like: 

  • Active listening to de-escalate violent people. 
  • Understanding how the “fight or flight” response works and the place of intuition. 
  • Identifying the stress response in others and preparing one’s self for a stressful encounter. 
  • Anyone can learn the most appropriate response to a potentially violent situation.


Brian Miller instructed Vermont State Employees in the wake of the tragedy of the murder of a DCF worker and witnessed the empowerment they experienced as a result of learning skills to better protect themselves and their fellow staff. 

This training is for personnel who have direct contact with the public. By making employees more confident in their own personal safety they will be more successful in the workplace. This goes far beyond the physical security of your worksite but is designed to protect employees wherever they are.

This course is approved for 2 hours of continuing education credits.

All NVRA courses are held in the upstairs conference center. Please notify NVRA staff if you require mobility accommodations. Parking is available adjacent to the NVRA building. Please do not park in the spots in front of our neighbor's building (200 Commerce, grey siding).
